JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:              Development Director

REPORTS TO:         Commanding Officer

LOCATION:             Wilmington, NC

FLSA STATUS:       Exempt

The Director of Development will oversee the creation and development of an integrated development department to advance and substantially increase revenue streams for expansion.

The goal of the development effort is to significantly grow over the next five years and implement a sustainability plan during this time. This individual will be expected to establish and implement a comprehensive and results-oriented development plan, including research, planning strategy development and implementation at a variety of levels for both annual and capital campaign donations.

Must have the ability to think strategically and act tactically to develop, analyze, manage and execute all development functions with emphasis on securing new and sustained funds as a complement to the development efforts of the past.

Experience securing major gifts. This individual must be an organized and seasoned professional who is a gifted communicator with keen attention to detail and performance metrics.

Capital Campaign Responsibilities: Develops relationships with new and past donors and keeps them informed of progress of project and ensures that solicitations are being made and that pledges are being collected on time. Bills, tracks, and acknowledges gifts for the capital campaign. Plans, organizes and arranges planning and follow-up meetings with the Capital Campaign Committee.

Strategic Planning & Implementation: Work with Salvation Army leadership team and the Advisory Board to develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive fund development plan to meet established financial goals and objectives. Analyze, research, and pursue new strategies to increase giving from individual donors.  Develop and supervise systems to track internal information and to steward donors through all stages of the giving cycle.

Management & Administration:  Manage, oversee, train and motivate a development department.  Manage donor database, gift processing, donor acknowledgement, as well as, monitor and track all donor and revenue activity.   Manage, organize, and motivate the Board to assist in development activities.

Events: Responsible for planning, facilitating, and organizing specific cultivation/ fundraising/ volunteer events.

Major Gifts: Sets-up the Greater Wilmington Region "100 Top Donors" Program. Through personal visits, establish close relationships with these individuals, foundations and organizations, keeping them informed of Salvation Army events, programs, and opportunities for service.

Direct Mail Vendor: Manages Direct Mail Vendor relationship, ensures that the mailings/ reports are accurate and on time. Works with our direct mail solicitation firm to enhance all mail appeals to get the best results.

Public Speaking Responsibilities: Remains proactive in generating speaking engagements to present The Salvation Army services to the community. Leads and assists with public speaking engagements to community events or various organizations to relay and interpret the mission of The Salvation Army. Leads United Way's Employee Campaign for Salvation Army Employees.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

Work with DHQ's Resource Development Associate and Planned Giving Director assigned to our area to enhance support opportunities.

Assist the Accounting Department to properly acknowledge gifts for tax purposes and to help with revenue projections for the annual budget.

Works closely with the Advisory Board and assigned committees – Board Development and Resource Development committees.  Prepares status reports for monthly Advisory Board meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

4 year college degree and minimum of 5 years' experience in nonprofit arena preferred, with experience in fundraising or in Business Development and sales.  Proven experience in meeting goals and exceeding expectations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of fund development best practices and fundraising tools and technology, including donor databases, e-mail and online campaigns and donor research. Deep understanding of development strategies, the development cycle, techniques and best practices.

Experience in securing major gifts.   This individual must be an organized and seasoned professional who is a gifted communicator with keen attention to detail and performance metrics.

Excellent managerial skills. Strong analytical skills. Exceptional interpersonal and verbal communication skills with the ability to inspire and motivate donors, constituents, staff and volunteers. Extreme tact and discretion, attention to detail, and a commitment to excellence.

Experience in and understanding of planned giving and grants would be a plus.

Ability to work under stress and successfully handle multiple priorities.

Ability to relate positively with people in all situations and to exemplify the spirit and character of the Christian life and the ideals of The Salvation Army.
